Ready to become a licensed independent auto dealer in Virginia? This 2-day pre-licensing course is your required first step.

Presented by the Virginia Independent Automobile Dealers Association (VIADA), this course is led by experienced industry professionals including former dealers with 40+ years of combined experience who know what it takes to succeed.

Over two days, you’ll gain a complete understanding of how to launch and operate a dealership, including:

  • Licensing requirements and Virginia Motor Vehicle Dealer Board (MVDB) compliance
  • Local zoning and dealership setup
  • Sales processes, required forms, and regulations
  • Operating costs and business fundamentals
  • Ethics and best practices for long-term success

You’ll also have the opportunity to connect with trusted industry partners who can support your business from day one.

This course is open to new and existing dealers, as well as their employees, and is offered at locations throughout Virginia.

Class Details & Requirements:

  • Schedule: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (both days)
  • Arrival Policy: Doors close at 8:15 AM sharp
    • Late arrivals will not be admitted and must reschedule
  • Lunch: 1-hour break daily (nearby dining options available)
  • Minimum Enrollment: 10 students required per class
  • Class Size Limits: Typically 25–50 attendees depending on venue
  • Testing:
    • Course exam administered at the end of Day 2
    • Minimum passing score: 80%
    • Must pass before taking final exam at a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Customer Service Center
    • Students who do not pass must retake the course at their own expense

Class begins promptly at 8 AM; please plan to arrive early to sign in and get seated. No one will be allowed in class after 8:15 AM
